About NJTracker
Independent · unofficial · free
NJTracker shows live NJ Transit and Amtrak departures from New York Penn Station, and predicts which track each NJ Transit train will leave from before the track is posted.
Who makes it
NJTracker is an independent project by Stanley Wu. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or operated by NJ Transit or Amtrak, and it is free to use with no account.
How the predictions work
NJ Transit’s live train-position feed reports the signal circuit each train is standing on, and inside Penn Station those circuits map onto track numbers, so a train that has reached its platform can be read directly. Before that, NJTracker uses the history of which tracks each train, line and time of day have used, and what is occupying the other tracks right now. The full explanation is in the track prediction guide.
How accuracy is measured
Ten minutes before departure each prediction is locked and saved. After the train leaves it is compared with the track NJ Transit actually posted. The accuracy page publishes the results day by day and line by line — both the share that named the exact track and the share that named the right platform — along with a dated list of every change to how predictions are made.
What’s on the site
- The live board: NJ Transit and Amtrak departures from NY Penn and other stations, with predicted tracks, stops, delays and where each train is now.
- Favorites and train alerts: save the trips you take and get a notification with the track. Favorites stay on your device; see Privacy.
- Station and trip guides: timetables, first and last trains, and the usual Penn track of every train, for 25 stations.
- NY Penn tracks: which tracks NJ Transit trains really leave from, by line and time of day.
- Games: Garden State Gridlock, a free sliding-car puzzle with New Jersey roads, and Beats To Beats, a free four-lane rhythm game played together.
How it stays up to date
The board refreshes every few seconds while you watch it. Over the last 30 days it recorded 3,261 NJ Transit departures from NY Penn and the track each one left from. Every prediction is scored each night after 3 AM, and the track history the predictions draw on is rebuilt each night too. Timetables come from NJ Transit’s published GTFS feed and are reloaded whenever NJ Transit publishes a new one. The copy in use now was published September 20, 2026.
Where the data comes from
Departures, tracks, stops and train positions come from NJ Transit’s public rail data feeds and published GTFS timetable; Amtrak speeds, and the Amtrak trains north of NY Penn (which NJ Transit’s feeds don’t list), come from Amtraker; weather from Open-Meteo. Schedule and live data obtained from NJ Transit and redistributed by NJTracker. Times may not be real time — always check the station displays. Not affiliated with or licensed by NJ Transit or Amtrak.
